Blog Post 4: Kitchen Confidential: The Art and Science of Crafting Cannabis Edibles

ree

Introduction:

Edibles offer a discrete, long-lasting, and potent way to experience cannabis. But they are also the number one cause of "too-high" experiences. Why? Because making and dosing them is a science. This guide will walk you through the chemistry and craftsmanship of creating safe, effective, and delicious cannabis-infused gummies at home.

Step 0: The Golden Rule of Edibles - "Start Low, Go Slow"

This cannot be overstated. The effects of edibles can take up to 2 hours to fully manifest and can last for many hours. You can always eat more, but you can't uneat them. A standard dose for a beginner is 2.5mg to 5mg of THC.

The Magic (and Danger) of Digestion: Why Edibles Feel Different

When you smoke or vape, THC enters your bloodstream directly through your lungs and goes straight to your brain. When you eat it, it takes a detour:

  1. It travels to your liver.

  2. Your liver metabolizes Delta-9-THC into a compound called 11-Hydroxy-THC.

  3. This new compound is significantly more potent and has a much easier time crossing the blood-brain barrier.

  4. The result? A stronger, more full-body, and longer-lasting high than inhalation.

The Recipe: Foolproof Cannabis Gummies

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup cold fruit juice (no pulp)

  • 2 tbsp cannabis-infused coconut oil (see potency calculation below!)

  • 2 tbsp unflavored gelatin

  • 1 tbsp sunflower lecithin (powder or liquid) [Crucial for binding oil and water]

  • 1 (85g) package flavored Jell-O

  • Gummy molds

The Most Important Step: Calculating Potency

  1. Know your oil. If you used 7g of 20% THC flower to infuse 1 cup of oil: 7000mg x 0.20 = 1400mg THC total.

  2. This recipe uses 2 tbsp of that oil. 1 cup = 16 tbsp. So: 1400mg ÷ 16 = 87.5mg THC per tbsp. 2 tbsp = ~175mg THC for the entire batch.

  3. If your mold makes 50 gummies: 175mg ÷ 50 = 3.5mg THC per gummy. This is a perfect low-dose treat!

Instructions:

  1. Bloom Gelatin: In a saucepan, whisk juice and unflavored gelatin. Let sit 5 mins.

  2. Dissolve: Add Jell-O and lecithin. Warm over LOW heat until dissolved. Do not boil.

  3. Emulsify: Vigorously whisk in cannabis oil until completely combined and no oil slicks are visible.

  4. Pour: Use a dropper to carefully fill molds.

  5. Set: Refrigerate for 1 hour.

  6. Cure (Optional but Recommended): Pop gummies out and let them air-dry on a rack in the fridge for 12-24 hours. This prevents mold and improves texture.

What to Do If You Overconsume:

  • Don't panic. Remind yourself that you are safe and the feeling will pass.

  • Hydrate. Drink water.

  • Eat. Having a non-infused snack can help.

  • Try black peppercorns. Chewing on a few can help, thanks to the calming terpene beta-caryophyllene.

  • Rest. Find a calm, comfortable space and put on a relaxing show or music.

FAQ:

  • Q: Why did my last batch of edibles separate/not work?

    • A: You likely missed the emulsification step. Lecithin is essential for binding the fat-based cannabis oil with the water-based ingredients. Whisking vigorously is key.

  • Q: Why do edibles take so long to kick in?

    • A: It's all about the digestive process. They have to be broken down in the stomach and processed by the liver before the active compounds enter your bloodstream. Eating them on an empty stomach will speed up onset; a full stomach will slow it down.
